With a portfolio of strong products that rival – and even surpass – the quality of traditional Japanese and American economy cars, combined with undeniably attractive design, Kia has turned its reputation around in just a matter of years.
The Kia Sportage’s sheet metal is well proportioned and sleek, and this SUV has a handsome rear quarter profile. It looks as off-road-ready as a Jeep Cherokee, but 19-inch wheels (standard on the SX Turbo model) and tasteful chrome trim make this crossover look like it could blend in among BMWs and Mercedes-Benzes. The one I looked at was finished in the handsome “Burnished Copper” metallic paint, and I think it’s the color that suits the Sportage best.
Inside, things are quite handsome as well. The vertical vents mounted on either side of the touchscreen remind me of an old-school off-roader, but the thick, flat-bottomed steering wheel is more reminiscent of a sports car. Easy-to-read controls are surrounded by piano-black plastic, and soft-touch materials that line the surfaces with which you’d normally come into contact. Another highlight is the panoramic sunroof, which is a big hit with rear-seat passengers.
Speaking of seats, the leather upholstery is soft and nice. Power-operated adjustment makes it easy for drivers of pretty much any size to get comfortable. Heated and cooled front seats on the SX trim are a nice touch, as is the heated steering wheel. Rear passengers are well off too, thanks to a decent amount of legroom for the small SUV class and the ability to recline the seat backs slightly. Even with taller people sitting up front, average sized adults should be plenty comfortable in the back.
